Outfit of the Week | Out of Sight (1998, dir. by Steven Soderbergh)
alright, this week on Scene Stealers, we’re getting SPORTY.
we’re scorin’ touchbacks. we’re slammin’ dunkers. we’re runnin’ that pigball all the way to the endplace where we’ll inevitably participate in a ritualistic celebration dance that involves a lot of knee and facial charisma.
we will also finally get to the bottom of who the actual hell Dan Marino is!
but first…
this week’s outfit comes from one of my all-time favorite movies, Out of Sight.
it’s career criminal George Clooney and gun-wielding, US Marshal Jennifer Lopez.
it’s Catherine Keener in tight little capris holding a bunny.
it’s Steve Zahn with a handlebar mustache, headband, and perpetual sunglasses.
it’s Ving Rhames being incredibly charming/good at stealing cars from old ladies.
it’s a very bald Albert Brooks and a devilish Don Cheadle.

the cast is incredible and honestly hard to beat. it’s a joy to watch all these actors in the same flick being directed by Soderbergh no less. match made in freakin’ heaven.
Jack Foley (Clooney) is a longtime bank robber who has recently been arrested and jailed again. he isn’t really about that life anymore, so he decides a casual prison break is what’s best. his buddy (Rhames) is waiting for him in an idling car outside the prison walls for when he escapes, but there’s a sudden minor snag. US Marshal, Karen Sisco (Lopez), has pulled up to the prison at the exact moment Foley is escaping and she (and her very large shotgun) immediately alerts the guards. Foley grabs Sisco and throws her (and himself) in the trunk of the car, instructing Rhames to, um, drive away quickly.
in the few moments of being stuck in incredibly close (sedan trunk) quarters, the law and the lawbreaker really hit it off. when they go their separate ways, immense sexual tension drives the plot and takes the viewer to places a viewer can only DREAM of going. it’s such a good movie - go and watch now!!
alright, like i hinted to before…the outfit this week is very Sporty Spice.
it’s Karen Sisco on her day off, just hangin’ with pops (oh, yeah, i forgot to mention her dad is played by Dennis Farina), drinkin’ coffee, trying not the think about a certain prison escapee with ruggedly good looks and a highly specific lawless charm!
she feels especially conflicted thinking about Foley because she’s currently seeing cool, buzzcut, choker necklace FBI guy, Ray Nicolette (Michael Keaton).
anyways, dorky boyfriend aside, this cropped Dolphins jersey and rolled-up Adidas shorts combo is what dreams are made of, i have to admit. we love an athletic lounge situation. we love a sports fan OFF-DUTY. also, i finally solved the mystery of who #13 on the Miami Dolphins was at the time of this movie’s release!
word on the street is that Dan Marino wore the #13 jersey and was the quarterback for the Miami Dolphins from 1983-1999. he must’ve been pretty good at playing football if Karen Sisco herself was a fan.
(see below for confirmation that he was, indeed, a pretty strong asset to the team)…
alright, enough of this stats talk, let’s get to the FASHION -
i know…the outfit this week is VERY involved…
Honorable Mention of the Week | it seems worthy of mentioning that, at the start of the movie, the reason George is caught after robbing a bank is because his car won’t start…
Holy shit, what a look.
I’m totally watching this movie 🍿
